Staying Human in the Digital Age
IN How to Fix the Future, one of the world's best known and controversial commentators on the digital revolution, Mr Andrew Keen, focusses on what can be done about seemingly intractable dangers that the Internet poses to our culture and society.
It is frightening how we have become consumers of technology without grasping the larger implications of the digital revolution on our lives and society. Where smart technology has created a dynamic where it is moving amazingly fast through More's Law, and where the digital revolution is changing the world with the doubling of computer chips every 18 months.
The author explains five pillars which are relevant today and have always been important in terms of fixing the future and dealing with disruption: regulation, innovation, consumer power, citizen engagement, and education.
In education for instance, cited examples of Montessori and Waldorf schools show that we need not rely on technology. However, rather than ban technology altogether, a refocus on the humanist qualities of education is needed.
Sharp and intelligent, Mr Keen's latest offering provides a compelling and stimulating narrative of how to impose human agency and regain control over the digital revolution by providing a map of sorts to help us find our way around the unfamiliar terrain of networked society.
